Draft Review

“Wow Johnny Damon is still playing”

The following is a draft review of My fantasy baseball league draft.  Though it won’t be known until at least June how successful it really is just wanted to comment on some strengths and mistakes.  Listed below is my team for h2h yahoo sports fantasy 10 starting offense including 1 utl and 3 starting pitcher 2 relief and 2 pitchers.  I try to draft my pitchers lower taking advantage of the offensive players while others draft pitchers I will wait to draft my #1 till say the 5th or 6th the past 2 #1’s Felix in the 6th and Josh Johnson in the 5th.  I usually go for the next best thing but I drafted Johnson in the 4th

1.    (10)    David Wright (NYM – 3B)
2.    (15)    Prince Fielder (Mil – 1B) Picking at the turn 1B is what you are going to get so i went safe no need to repeat Ian Kinsler ’10
3.    (34)    Joe Mauer (Min – C)
4.    (39)    Josh Johnson (Fla – SP)
5.    (58)    Cole Hamels (Phi – SP)  This was a reach and due to lack of draft prep mostly in hindsight I would have went with heyward
6.    (63)    David Price (TB – SP)
7.    (82)    Shane Victorino (Phi – OF) This guy is starting to become an every year all star and team leader
8.    (87)    Mike Stanton (Fla – OF)  This could be a draft steal maybe even a 1st rounder next year with 36hr 101 rbi 269 avg 2011 projections
9.    (106)    Ben Zobrist (TB – 1B,2B,OF) Hoping for a rebound but I like the position flexibility
10.    (111)    Ian Desmond (Was – SS)
11.    (130)    Vladimir Guerrero (Bal – OF)  My veteran player take a crack at one if he flames out well easy position to fill
12.    (135)    Daniel Hudson (Ari – SP)
13.    (154)    Matt Thornton (CWS – RP)  I wait on closers and grab gems flame thrower 101 waiver wire helps fill this gap
14.    (159)    Madison Bumgarner (SF – SP)
15.    (178)    Jorge De La Rosa (Col – SP) Could be a solid top of rotation guy
16.    (183)    Desmond Jennings (TB – OF)  Right around here I started getting creative and totally lost out on David Ortiz a steal in the 16th
17.    (202)    Fernando Rodney (LAA – RP)
18.    (207)    Freddie Freeman (Atl – 1B)
19.    (226)    Hong-Chih Kuo (LAD – RP)  This is speculation that Broxton loses the closing job if not top middle relief pitcher

Overall I give myself a B+ to and A-.  My pitching is stellar and top four picks were money.  Some faults in there and with the new change switching from avg to ABP my weak avg should be hidden.

Yes this is just one team in one league I have some experience winning going for a 3 peat could have been four if not for ’08 second place finish in a very competitive experienced league.  In the 10 years I have played Fantasy Baseball I have missed the playoffs twice.  Grade your draft here and remember don’t panic let your guys get comfortable and injuries pan out it’s a long season.  if you make the playoff you have a shot to win #1 #4 or #6 seed depending on your format.
